Longtime Local Orthopedic Surgeon William O. Thompson, MD, Joins WMCHealth’s Advanced Orthopaedics in Poughkeepsie

Longtime local orthopedic surgeon William O. Thompson, MD, FAAOS, has joined to the Poughkeepsie office of Advanced Orthopaedics, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth).

Dr. Thompson — certified by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, with a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine by the ABOS — practices at the Advanced Orthopaedics office in MidHudson Regional Hospital's Atrium, 1 Webster Ave., Suite 502, in Poughkeepsie. Before joining Advanced Orthopaedics, Dr. Thompson practiced at Advantage Orthopaedics in Poughkeepsie since 2001.

Dr. Thompson served as the Mets' assistant team physician from 1997–1998, was the Marist College Athletics Department's team physician from 1997–2000 and was the Vassar College Department of Athletics & Physical Education team physician from 1998–2015.

Originally from Kingston, Dr. Thompson received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed a general surgery internship through Pitt Med at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, a research fellowship at Pitt Med and an orthopedic surgery residency at UPMC. Dr. Thompson was also an orthopedic surgery clinical instructor at Pitt Med.

He followed his Pittsburgh training with a sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.His special interests now are in arthritis and sports medicine, including arthroscopic surgery, arthroscopic shoulder reconstruction and joint replacement.

Dr. Thompson lives in Saugerties and is an avid triathlete, completing many Ironman triathlons and national and international marathons since 2008.
